Custom Harley-Davidson XG750 Outfitted with BST Carbon Fiber Wheels

The Harley Hooligans of Suicide Machine Co., put together this rowdy chromoly-framed Street 750 ripper that's ready to race on dirt, pavement, or anything else you throw at it.

Built by Shaun and Aaron Guardado of Suicide Machine Co.

From the Artist:

We took the new Harley-Davidson platform, traditionally associated with open road cruisers, and built our version in an atypical fashion. The basis of this build was 100% performance driven. While its design inspiration came from performance street bikes as well as GP&TT race bikes, our version will be perfectly suited for winding mountain roads and definitely at home on the race track. In racing, lighter is better, so we used as many lightweight components as possible, from aluminum bodywork to the carbon-fiber wheels and swingarm.

There really isn't much to the bike when you look at it, it's a bare-bones racer down to its core. The saying, "Every race bike is a show bike, but not every show bike is a race bike," speaks about the art of speed. Bikers can appreciate a well-balanced machine built purely for speed just like a well-composed painting. Both are works of art in their own right.

My brother and I have been referred to as “walking works of art” because of our heavily tattooed appearances. The tattoos we have don't necessarily define who we are as people per se. We like to think they enhance each of us as a whole. The paint job on our bike is an extension of that thought.

Benefit of Carbon Fiber Wheels and Swingarms

Carbon fiber wheels are the best bolt-on performance product that can be purchased for a motorcycle. In addition to looking nice they provide an instant improvement in performance, something a rider feels immediately. Because of the much lighter weight, there is an instant benefit in handling and suspension compliance as well. The 40- to 60-percent in unsprung weight savings helps deliver better acceleration and braking by reducing the rotational moment of inertia. More importantly, the bulk of the wheel weight moves to the metal hub, which has far less effect on the performance of the wheel than the rim because of what amounts to a flywheel effect. The closer a weight mass is located to a rotating axis, the less energy it takes to accelerate it. Our carbon fiber wheels, with a much lighter rim than any conventional metal wheel — even a forged magnesium one — effectively improve engine performance via easier, faster acceleration.

The same holds true for a carbon fiber swingarm. The properties of carbon fiber allow the swingarm to be designed specifically to control stiffness on various planes. A swingarm needs to be very strong yet flexible as it withstands the inertia of forward thrust, and at the same time be stiff so it doesn't flex under suspension load. Carbon fiber fabrication allows the designer to tune the direction of stiffness and/or flexibility, and at the same time reducing weight.
