WAS CHECKING THE SEAT PRESSURE ON THE ZX14 VALVE SPRINGS & FOUND BOTH THE INT & EX WERE ONLY 28 LBS AT THE INSTALLED HEIGHT 1.324" . THIS SEEMS MIGHTY WEAK . HAVING A GSXR 1K SPIT A SHIM & AFTER CHECKING THEIR SPRINGS WAS ONLY 20 LBS OR SO , SO UPGRADED TO THE 750 SPRINGS & BEEN GOOD TO GO SINCE & 40LBS PRESSURE. DONT WANT THE SAME TO HAPPEN TO THE 14 SO THINKING OF GOING WITH THE CARPENTER SPRINGS . MOTOR IS ALL STOCK 14K MILES JUST N PROCESS OF PUTTING IN NEW BEARINGS & RINGS SO MIGHT AS WELL DO THIS TO SAVE HEADACHE LATER ANY THOUGHTS ON THE SPRINGS THEY RATED @ 62 LBS ON THE SEAT .THANKS

I believe that there are shims available to bump the stock springs up to 40lbs but if your going that far I would just put a set of duals in forget about it!

tubo1joe,

Tommy is correct and 9.5 times out of 10 I will steer people away from aftermarket valve springs if they are using stock cams. I suggest shimming the stock springs as strong as you can to stay .030 off of coil bind, as long as you are under 60-65 lbs. in most cases. Usually, the stock springs themselves won’t allow much more than .020 (1/2 mm) of shim anyway.

As far as going with aftermarket cams with aggressive profiles: Although Bob and I don't exactly 'do lunch' when I travel up north... I have a tremendous amount of respect for his engine building skills. He also has the best valve springs the US sportbike industry has to offer, IMO.

My engines usually see 60+ lbs of seat pressure - sometimes more (depending upon RPM operating range, cam profile, valve size etc). Valve float kills engines and too little spring pressure doesn’t allow the cams to properly control the valves. Some people think that too much spring pressure wastes horsepower – this is not the case because you get most of it back when the pressure forces the cam lobe over center. On our big engines, it’s sometimes difficult to hold them at top dead center without the spark plugs in place, because they keep rolling over on their own! Free horsepower, courtesy of cam spring pressure… what could be better?!
