The Loring Timing Associations September Harvest event was held September 1-2nd at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, ME and TLN Motorsports finished the event with 8 new LTA LSR National records. With the teams ZX-6rr still out of action from a blown engine 7 weeks earlier at the same venue, TLN Motorsports returned with only the ZX-10R and a point to prove. When the weekend was finished Land Speed history was once again made. 8 National records and a fastest standing mile speed of 204.791 mph (fastest standing mile pass ever on that motorcycle) and a fastest standing 1.5 mile pass of 206.542 mph. Those are big speeds for a N/A true 998cc bike.
The weekend was very challenging with Saturday having a 12-16 mph head wind. The gusty head wind had the team changing gearing, tire pressures after every run. The bike developed an oil leak that had to be repaired and a temperature that was falling all day played havoc with keeping a good AFR on the bike. Despite the adversity 3 new records were set on Saturday with a fastest standing mile of 194.674 mph and a fastest standing 1.5 mile of196.245 mph. Considering the conditions we were satisfied with being half way to our goal of 6 new records even though we wanted faster speeds.
Sunday started cold with a 40 degree temperature as the runs started and the forecast tailwind of 2-3 mph was more of a cross wind at the start line and a head wind on the big end. We again had to make more gearing changes as the track temperature was to cold to handle the high air pressures we run in the tires to pull a tall gear. Spinning through all the shifts was not an option for fast speeds. Keeping temperature in the motorcycle was also a problem as leaving the line at 210-212 degrees would give you a temperature of 175-172 degrees at the mile and 150-153 degrees at the 1.5 mile. Way to cold to make the power needed on the big end. MPH pickups of 1.8-2.2mph were common from the 1-1.5 mile mark. Well under the normal 4-6 mph gains.
By mid-day we had dialed in and were turning consistent standing mile speeds of 200-202 mph and 1.5 mile speeds of 203-205 mph. The record total was up to our goal of 6. The last adjustment made was to shift points and the final 2 records of the weekend were set. We made runs until the very end running completely out of fuel on our last pass of the event about ½ mile past the traps.
Eight total new records and speeds we could be happy with had us smiling. We worked hard and never gave up. It was a very rewarding weekend and one we are all very proud of.
Next up is the Throttle Nation Magazine Top Speed Challenge in Ohio September 29-30th, and yes the ZX-6rr along with the ZX-10R will be there. We hope to finish the season on a high note by winning both the 650cc N/A and 1000cc N/A class titles, along with setting new ECTA National records on each bike.
